SPYC & Day of Caring Need Volunteers!

DOC15 Flyer - 5.5x8.5

DAVIS, CA, August 11, 2015—Suicide Prevention and Crisis Services of Yolo County is excited to have been selected among 37 regional community organizations to participate in United Way California Capital Region’s 2015 Day of Caring, a day when volunteers, business leaders, campaign coordinators and certified nonprofit leaders come together to help local nonprofits complete important service projects as a way of giving back to their community. Day of Caring takes place on September 11th, a National Day of Service and Remembrance when millions of people throughout the U.S. and in 150 countries observe the day by performing good deeds that help others. This is the second year in a row that Suicide Prevention has been chosen to participate.

Suicide Prevention’s project will have volunteers giving back to its lifesaving crisis line volunteer counselors by updating the crisis line volunteer room, where the volunteers answer the crisis lines 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. These dedicated individuals volunteer at least six hours each week to people of any age who are experiencing a mental health or other emotional crisis in their lives. The volunteers will help make the room more efficient and comfortable by adding new furniture pieces, storage units, and well-deserved amenities, including blankets, phone chargers, snacks, toiletries and more.

“The Day of Caring promotes both the spirit and value of volunteerism,” said Diane Sommers, Executive Director for Suicide Prevention. “Those who choose to volunteer help increase awareness and demonstrate what people working together can accomplish for the good of the community.”

United Way is hoping to recruit more than 1,000 volunteers to contribute to the day’s projects. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, and will start work on their projects following the Day of Caring kick-off rally taking place from 8:00-9:00 a.m. at Cal Expo. To volunteer, visit, where you can browse through project options and register for the project of your choice.

Past groups have remarked that it was comforting to be around those who have experienced a similar loss and others have said that it was good for them to be able to talk to people who understand the complex grieving process around a loss to suicide.
Groups are usually 6 – 8 people in size and though these dates are set, they may be moved or postponed if there are not enough attendees to run the group. These groups are facilitated by an experienced, licensed clinician.
